We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Juanita Moore, the trailblazing African-American actress possibly best known for her role in Intimation of Life. If you’re a classics lover like I am, you may have also seen her in films such as Witness to Murder (where she was actually credited as ‘Negress’–but that’s another post entirely…), Pinky, Women’s Prison, Ransom!, The Opposite Sex, The Girl Can’t Help It, The Singing Nun, and A Child Is Waiting. As was (tragically) customary during the early days if Hollywood, Black Actors were seldom recognized for their work; as a result, most of Ms. Moore’s roles were uncredited. If you’re lucky enough to find her interview with Robert Osbourne from the very first TCM Film Festival, so watch it; it is so very worth it.
What I will find extremely interesting is if Turner Classic Movies will give Juanita Moore the same respect, recognition and retrospective as they did for Joan Fontaine and Eleanor Parker. Let’s hope…
