#WADFF Final Call: There’s still time to submit your films

Brooklyn, NY 1 March 2016: The Brooklyn Chapter of The Links announces the final Call for Film Entries for the 15th Annual Women of African Descent Film Festival (WADFF). WADFF will showcase films focused on Women, their families, neighborhoods, and the global community. Featuring an international roster of films, the Festival will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at LIU Brooklyn, Media Arts Department, Spike Lee Screening Room, 10 am – 6 pm.

Films must be produced, written, or directed by a female filmmaker of African descent and must have been completed on or after June 1, 2010. All work must be submitted by March 18, 2016. Jurors Choice Awards and stipends will be presented to participating filmmakers.

Continuing its legacy of showcasing the talent and accomplishments of artists of African descent, The Women of African Descent Film Festival is celebrating its 15th Anniversary in 2016.

Formed in 1952, The Brooklyn Chapter of The Links is dedicated to the support of educational, civic and cultural activities in Brooklyn. It is a chapter of The Links, Inc. an international, not-for-profit corporation, whose membership consists of 14,000 professional women of color in 282 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The Brooklyn Chapter works under the guidelines of its national organization in providing services to its Brooklyn Community in five mission areas:  The Arts, Services to Youth, National Trends and Services, International Trends, and Health and Wellness. A focus of the Chapter’s arts programming is to empower women and youth by lending support and encouragement to emerging artists – with a particular focus on filmmakers for the past 15 years.

The foundation for all of the chapter’s programs and services is rooted in the African American tradition of giving and volunteerism. Members share a deep sense of communal responsibility, and for the past 63 years, have been committed to actively initiating and supporting educational, cultural, and civic programs that positively impact the lives of people of African descent residing in Brooklyn.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE To showcase films which are centered around the theme of Linkages: Women, Their Families, Neighborhoods, and the Global Community, and to support the artistic development of Women filmmakers of African Descent by providing a supportive exhibition platform, offering stipends to participants, and seeking industry opportunities that will help to expose the filmmakers’ works and further their careers.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL The Women of African Descent Film Festival (WADFF) is celebrating its 13th Anniversary in 2014. In 2002, to mark the milestone of its 50th anniversary, and to continue its legacy of showcasing the talent and accomplishments of artists of African descent, the Brooklyn Chapter began sponsoring the WADFF. This tradition has continued annually since then, and takes place on the first Saturday in May each year.

GENERAL RULES & SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All films must be produced, written or directed by a female filmmaker of African descent, and must have been completed on or after June 1, 2010. Submission deadline is Wednesday, April 2nd. Jurors Choice Awards and stipends will be presented to the participating filmmakers.

Filmmakers are encouraged to submit both a DVD screener as well as a digital screener*. Please note: there is no submission fee, and films will not be returned to you unless you include a self-addressed padded envelope. With your playable DVD submission, please include a synopses, crew list, press kit and any stills you would like to appear in the program and/or advertisements.

Now Taking Submissions for the 22nd Pan African Film Festival!

Currently, PAFF is accepting submissions of independent features, shorts, narratives and documentary films made by or about people of African descent. Applications are available via the PAFF website at www.paff.org, by emailing ao@paff.org  or calling (310) 337-4737.

ABOUT THE PAN AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL

Gearing up for its 22nd anniversary, the Pan African Film and Arts Festival (PAFF), is America’s largest and most prestigious Black film and arts festival. Each year, it screens more than 150 films made by and/or about people of African descent from the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, the South Pacific, Latin America, Europe and Canada. PAFF holds the distinction of being the largest Black History Month event in the country.

PAFF was founded in 1992  by award-winning actor Danny Glover (“The Color Purple,” “Lethal Weapon” movie franchise), Emmy Award-winning actress Ja’Net DuBois (best known for her role as Willona  in the tv series, “Good Times”) and executive director, Ayuko Babu, an  international legal, cultural and political consultant who specializes in African Affairs.  PAFF is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of ethnic and racial respect and tolerance through the exhibit of films, art and creative expression.

The goal of  PAFF is to present and showcase the broad spectrum of Black creative works, particularly those that reinforce positive images, help to destroy negative stereotypes and depict an expanded vision of the Black experience. PAFF believes film and art can lead to better understanding and foster communication between peoples of diverse cultures, races, and lifestyles, while at the same time, serve as a vehicle to initiate dialogue on the important issues of our times.

ELIGIBILITY:

The PAFF is currently accepting applications for films and videos made by and/or about people of African descent. (Please note:the filmmaker(s) need not be of African or African American descent.) Films should preferably depict positive and realistic images and can be of any genre — drama, comedy, horror, adventure, animation, romance, science fiction, experimental, etc. PAFF accepts features and shorts both narrative and documentary. The film festival will accept submissions of works in progress; however, the final version  of the film must be completed no later than January 2, 2014.

COMPETITION:

The PAFF competition categories are: Best Narrative Feature,Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary, Best Director — First Feature, plus, Audience Favorite Awards  for Narrative Featureand Favorite Documentary. Films in competition must be copyrighted no earlier than 2013. With the exception of Audience Favorite Awards, all films are judged by industry professionals, selected by PAFF. In addition to competition awards, other programming and festival special prizes will be awarded.
